The Fatal Wound

"I saw that one of the heads of the beast seemed wounded beyond recovery—but the fatal wound was healed! The whole world marveled at this miracle and gave allegiance to the beast. They worshiped the dragon for giving the beast such power, and they also worshiped the beast. 'Who is as great as the beast?” they exclaimed. “Who is able to fight against him?' " (Revelation 13:3,4 - New Living Translation)

Three times in this chapter, the Anti-Christ's wound is mentioned, in verses three, twelve and fourteen. Verse twelve describes it as a deadly wound. Verse fourteen states that it was caused by a sword. Verse three describes it the same way as the wound of the Lamb are described in chapter five.

It seems that the Anti-Christ receives a fatal wound in either a battle or an assassination attempt. The Anti-Christ dies from this wound. However, before the world can mourn the loss of their leader, Satan resurrects him. I do not believe that Satan can bring a person back to life. Rather, he indwells the body of the Anti-Christ and animates like a puppet. So that Anti-Christ is Satan in the flesh. The Anti-Christ's miraculous recovery causes the entire world to wonder at the beast.

As a result of his amazing recovery from death, the people of the world proclaim him to be a god. He is worshiped and through him the dragon is worshiped. Not only is he given adulation, he is also feared. It seems that no one can match his abilities in diplomacy, war or charisma.

The Anti-Christ, indwelt by Satan, is wicked beyond belief. Yet it is only because God allows him and the people of the earth to fulfill their sinful desires that they can accomplish their wicked plans. The Tribulation period will demonstrate how wicked man is. When God removes the limitations which He now has in place, man deteriorates into greater sin.

Even though the Roman Church flourished during the 1260-year period, Revelation 13:3 tells us that the beast would indeed suffer a deadly wound, and this prophecy was exactly fulfilled in the year of 1798. "In 1798, 1260 years later [from 538], the pope was taken into captivity and the Catholic Church was dealt a mortal blow. It happened just as Revelation had foretold, with remarkable accuracy.....During the French Revolution and under orders from the revolutionary French government, General Alexander Berthier [one of Napoleon's generals] issued a proclamation in Rome on February 15, 1798, informing Pope Plus VI and the people of Rome that the pope should no longer 'exercise any function.' " (God Cares, p. 328). "Napoleon had dethroned the Pope, because the Pontiffs found themselves alone, the sole fountains of order, peace, law, and safety" in Western Europe. (The Temporal Power of the Vicar of Christ, p.27). In 1798, Napoleon intended that there would never be another pope.

The Roman Catholic Church is often made out to be the beast. Although, I do not agree with many of their doctrines, I do not think that they are the beast. The beast will be a person who rises to power at the beginning of the Tribulation. Now this post saying that the wounding of the beast was in 1798 does not make any sense. The wounding occurs during the 7 year Tribulation. If the beast was wounded in 1798 then the Tribulation ended around 1800 and Jesus returned. His 1000 year reign would have ended around 1900, and we would now be in the eternal age when there is no more sickness, pain or death. I do not think so. This type of interpretation of Revelation which ignores logic is why so many people find the book confussing.

I'm on board with much of what your saying. Although who's not to say that the beast isn't some type of fallen angel or one of satan's servants? I don't see how this beast has to start off as a human
